A diary written in 1871 by Anthony Fotheringham describes how members of the crew from the sailing clipper Pekina feasted on native shellfish from the Port River.
“Head wind, another boy and I rowed the pilot over on Torrens island, pick’d a lot of shellfish off the Mangrove Trees and had them for tea.”
Copies of the entries from his great grand-father’s diary were provided by Doug Fotheringham.
