Winter’s high tides
September 20, 2021Early on Thursday May 24th the Bureau of Meteorology issued a Severe Weather Warning for ‘damaging winds and abnormally high tides’. While the high tide was due to be 2.7m, the Bureau warned ‘at the Outer Harbor tide gauge, the sea level is forecast to reach around 3.5 to 3.8 metres mid to late afternoon on Thursday. This may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas and localised beach erosion’.
Luckily the wind eased during the afternoon and water didn’t overflow the Port River’s banks.
Situations like this clearly warn about the potential for flooding with increasing sea level rise.
The State Government needs to plan and fund measures that will safely contain the River.
