The Save St Kilda Mangroves Alliance publicly released, on August 4th, its St Kilda Mangroves Community Vision & Strategic Plan, in response to the devastating destruction of mangroves and samphires at St Kilda in 2020.

The Vision & Plan were developed from a community workshop of Alliance members, aided by the expertise of biologist Peri Coleman and ecologist Faith Coleman.

Charlotte Nitschke of the Conservation Council wrote the Vision & Plan, with Charlotte’s work enabled by a grant from the Department of Environment and Water.

The Alliance has since 2020/21 asked for salt to be removed from the leaking saltpan, into which hypersaline brine was directed by the salt field operator in 2020. While salt removal remains a key request of the Alliance, Alliance members are keen to demonstrate that there is a path towards better outcomes for all concerned and that is the intent of the Vision & Plan.

The launch was conducted at the St Kilda Board Walk with speakers including Faith Coleman, Peri Coleman, Deputy Premier and Environment Minister Susan Close, Dr Alice Jones (University of Adelaide) and Lindsay Virgo (St Kilda & Surrounds Progress & Tourism Assoc. Inc).

Representatives came from the Greens (Hon Tammy Franks MLC), Green Adelaide, the cities of Port Adelaide Enfield and Salisbury, Alliance members and other stakeholders. Check out the Alliance video of the launch.

Prior to the launch David Bevan, ABC 891 Mornings interviewed Susan Close and Peri Coleman – below
