Our local MP (and Minister for Health and Aged Care) Mark Butler has announced online that the Federal Government will be funding further restoration of native flat oyster reefs and mangrove habitat in the Port River Estuary.
Prior to the 2024 election, the ALP announced that it would implement an Urban Rivers and Catchments Program and a series of pre-election commitments were made which now form Round 1 of the Program,. The 2022–23 October Budget provided $91 million (from 2022–23) for that first round.
The Government is providing $181,500, over 2 years, “helping restore 5,000 square metres of native flat oyster (Ostrea angasi) shellfish reefs, an important fish habitat in the Port River Estuary.
This funding will help to restore the native flat oyster reefs and mangrove habitat, improving water quality and providing habitat for fish and other native species.
The project will be delivered by Ozfish”.
As well as funding native oyster reef and mangrove habitat restoration in the Port River, Mark Butler announced in May 2022 that an incoming Labor Government would contribute $2M to the Living Shoreline for Yitpi Yartapuultiku.
